Jamie Carragher Criticizes West Ham Star Amid Poor Season But Backs Him for Big Move
Jamie Carragher has delivered a blunt assessment of West Ham’s season, pointing partial blame at one of their most talented players—Mohammed Kudus—while still insisting the Ghanaian deserves a move to a bigger club.
West Ham closed out their home campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest, ending what has been an 18-month period to forget.
The downturn began under David Moyes and has continued under Graham Potter, who took over in January 2025.
Potter has only managed four wins in 18 games, and while he’s been afforded some leniency for inheriting a struggling squad mid-season, expectations are mounting.
High Spending, Low Returns
With £155 million spent last summer, many believe the current squad should be performing much better.
While Jarrod Bowen has been a standout and Aaron Wan-Bissaka earned Hammer of the Year honors, Mohammed Kudus—arguably the most naturally gifted player at the club—has divided opinion.
Kudus impressed in his debut campaign with 20 goal involvements and attracted interest from Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City.
But his performances this season have dipped, particularly against mid- and lower-table sides.
Carragher Points Finger at Kudus
Speaking during West Ham’s loss to Forest, Carragher criticized Kudus for being “anonymous” and failing to impact the game.
He noted that the 24-year-old, often substituted in crucial moments, hasn’t replicated the form that made him a breakout star last season.
“Kudus is definitely a quality player,” Carragher said on Sky Sports. “But part of the reason West Ham are struggling is that he hasn’t delivered this year.
He looked brilliant last season, but this time around, it hasn’t been the same.”
A Move Might Suit Everyone
Despite the criticism, Carragher believes Kudus could thrive again in a top-tier side, suggesting that both the player and West Ham might benefit from a transfer.
“I wouldn’t be surprised to see him move on. He needs a team closer to the top of the table, and West Ham need the money,” he added.
“It might be that this season was just a blip—and if another club can get the version of Kudus we saw last year, it could be a smart signing.”
Unsettled and Underperforming
Beyond the pitch, Kudus has shown signs of frustration. A heated clash with Julen Lopetegui earlier in the season, followed by a five-game suspension after a meltdown in a 4-1 loss to Spurs, has only added to concerns over his attitude.
Carragher’s verdict reflects a growing belief that Kudus is no longer a good fit for West Ham—and with the club looking to rebuild under Potter, a sale could help finance an important summer overhaul.
Now, it’s up to West Ham to maximize the return from one of their most valuable assets.
