Steven Fletcher, the former Sunderland and Scotland striker, has confirmed his departure from Wrexham, calling the decision “not by choice” and offering heartfelt thanks to the club, which he described as “the most magical” of his 22-year career.
The 38-year-old, who joined Wrexham in September 2023, played a pivotal role in the club’s rise from League Two to the Championship, scoring 16 goals in 77 appearances under manager Phil Parkinson. Fletcher quickly became a fan favourite during his time at the Welsh club.
In a social media post, Fletcher shared: “It’s with a heavy heart, and not by choice, that I announce my departure from what I can only describe as the most magical club I’ve ever played at! In my 22 years on the pitch, I’ve never experienced anything like this club.”
He continued, “I’ll be forever grateful for the opportunity to come here and rediscover my love for the game.
The experiences and opportunities this club has given me have been incredible. And this group of lads are the best I’ve ever shared a dressing room with.”
Fletcher also expressed his deep appreciation for the town and club, adding: “Wrexham, as a club, town, and community, will always have a special place in my heart that can never be replaced.
And to Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds – thank you! For the opportunity, the support, and the joy being part of this club has brought me!”
Fletcher, who previously played for Sunderland from 2012 to 2016 after a £12 million move, has also featured for clubs such as Wolves, Burnley, Sheffield Wednesday, and Stoke City.
Following his exit from Wrexham, the next step in the veteran striker’s career remains uncertain.
Fletcher made an immediate impact on his Premier League debut for Sunderland in 2012, scoring a brace in a 2-2 draw against Swansea City.
He went on to score in his next three league matches against Liverpool, West Ham United, and Wigan Athletic.
However, his time at Sunderland was plagued by injuries and inconsistency as the club frequently battled relegation, and he departed in 2016 after being released.
Hollywood star and Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds responded to Fletcher’s departure with a touching social media post, writing: “Mr Steven Fletcher: words aren’t enough to capture what you’ve brought to Wrexham, the sport, and the lives of myself and this entire town.”
“You’re not just a part of greatness, you ARE greatness,” Reynolds continued. “I’m going to miss you. I’ll miss your leadership, your wit, and the way you remind everyone — including me — that this is also supposed to be FUN. Like the first day we met, I’m here for you anytime and anywhere. Always.”
