Oxford United Eye Summer Reinforcements After Successful Championship Return
Oxford United head into the summer transfer window on a high, having achieved their key objective in their first season back in the Championship since 1998/99—securing survival.
Following the departure of manager Des Buckingham in mid-December, Gary Rowett stepped in and guided the club to safety with a strong finish to the campaign, ultimately securing 17th place.
With solid recruitment this summer, the U’s could take a major step toward firmly establishing themselves as a Championship club.
Carlton Morris Tipped as Ideal Signing for Oxford United
Fan pundit Luke Nigel was asked which realistic signing he would like to see this summer. His answer: Carlton Morris of Luton Town.
“Morris would be a great fit for Oxford,” said Luke. “He was relegated with Luton, and at 29, he’ll be eager to stay in the Championship.
He contributed 10 goals last season in 41 league games and has experience at every level—from the Premier League to League Two—including a loan spell at Oxford earlier in his career.”
Luke highlighted that manager Gary Rowett identified the need for a target-man striker back in January.
“Tom Bradshaw hasn’t quite delivered what was expected, and while Mark Harris looks set for a new deal, he’s more of a runner than a hold-up striker. Morris’ style and experience could make a huge difference next season.”
Morris Likely to Attract Interest Across the Championship
Despite a quieter season by his standards, Morris still scored eight goals in the Championship.
The previous year, he netted 20 goals during Luton’s promotion-winning campaign and followed that up with 11 goals in 38 Premier League appearances.
Now at 29 and still in his prime, Morris seems unlikely to continue with Luton in League One. His proven Championship pedigree means he’ll likely attract attention from several clubs in the second tier.
While signing Morris would be a major coup for Oxford, competition is expected to be fierce. Still, if the U’s can pull it off, they’d land a proven striker who could significantly strengthen their push to remain in the Championship.
