Sunderland Legend Peter Reid Shares Thoughts on Club’s Promotion Push
Peter Reid, a much-loved former Sunderland manager, has praised the Black Cats following their dramatic victory over Coventry City in the Championship play-off semi-final.
Reid believes the club fully deserves a return to the Premier League after nearly a decade away.
Reid was at the Stadium of Light to witness Dan Ballard’s dramatic late header that secured a win over Coventry and set up a final clash against Sheffield United this weekend.
Reflecting on the performance, Reid commended the team’s determination and called their promotion hopes well-earned.
Having experienced play-off heartbreak himself—when his Sunderland side lost on penalties to Charlton Athletic at Wembley in 1998—Reid believes the club is long overdue some good fortune.

Speaking about the tense semi-final, Reid said:
“It was definitely nerve-wracking. I tried to stay calm during the day at Ramside Hall in Durham, but the importance of the game really hit home.
When that last-minute goal went in, it was an unforgettable moment for everyone watching.
“As I drove through Durham, I saw signs all over the city wishing the team luck. The players were outstanding over both legs against Coventry and throughout the season.
Regis Le Bris and his staff deserve enormous credit for getting the best out of the team until the very end. The fans, especially during extra time, were phenomenal—their support visibly lifted the players.
“Sunderland’s supporters more than deserve Premier League football. I always feel incredibly welcomed when I return to the Stadium of Light, and the connection I have with the fans continues to grow. Sharing that night with them was something truly special.”
Looking ahead to the Wembley final, Reid added:
“Those of us who were there in 1998 know how unpredictable these games can be.
Finals can go either way—just like our heartbreak against Charlton. Let’s hope the luck swings our way this time. We’ve waited long enough.”
This year marks 30 years since Reid became Sunderland manager. To celebrate the milestone, he’ll be headlining a tribute event on June 13th at the Roker Hotel in Sunderland.
