Sunderland Set for Hemir Return After Disappointing Juventus Loan Spell
Luis Hemir Semedo is expected to return to Sunderland this summer after a lackluster loan stint with Juventus Next Gen. The Italian club has reportedly decided not to activate their option to sign the striker permanently.
According to JuventusNews24, the 21-year-old managed just two goals and one assist in 27 appearances for Juventus’ reserve side, who play in Serie C. The recent arrival of Shane van Aarle at the club further suggests that Hemir’s time in Turin is coming to an end.
Hemir joined Sunderland from Benfica two years ago but has struggled to make a significant impact on Wearside. He was not part of new head coach Régis Le Bris’ early plans and was subsequently loaned to Juventus’ second team for more playing time and development.
At the time of the move, Sunderland’s sporting director Kristjaan Speakman emphasized the loan as a key developmental step for the young forward. “This is a positive next step for Hemir,” Speakman said. “He’s gained a lot from being in our senior setup, and Juve Next Gen offers a good balance of competition and growth. We hope the regular minutes will benefit him.”
Le Bris Focused on Wembley Despite Praising Season Success
Sunderland head coach Régis Le Bris has described the team’s season as a huge success, regardless of the outcome in the Championship play-off final against Sheffield United. However, he stressed that full focus is now on finishing the job at Wembley.
Sheffield United, who collected 92 points in the regular season despite a two-point deduction, reached the final by comfortably defeating Bristol City 6-0 on aggregate.
After their intense semi-final win over Coventry City, Sunderland’s squad was granted a recovery day on Wednesday. Full preparations for the final will resume on Thursday.
“Reaching the final shows how special this season has been,” said Le Bris. “Win or lose, the journey we’ve had has been amazing. But now, the focus shifts fully to Wembley. We know it’ll be a big challenge, but we’re ready. Once we return to training, all eyes will be on that final step.”
