Glasner Eyes Long-Term Progress as Crystal Palace Celebrate Historic FA Cup Victory
Oliver Glasner is urging Crystal Palace to build on their FA Cup triumph and avoid becoming a “one-hit wonder” after the club secured their first major trophy with a stunning win over Manchester City at Wembley.
The Austrian manager, who had been sporting a now-iconic black jumper since a loss to Newcastle last month, has officially retired the lucky garment after Palace extended their unbeaten run to six games – culminating in Saturday’s historic victory.
“It’s already in the washing machine,” Glasner joked. “Its job is done. You won’t see it tomorrow. It’s back in the drawer – no more football matches for that sweater!”
As the team prepares to return to Premier League action tonight with a celebratory final home fixture against Wolves at Selhurst Park, they’ll be without key players Adam Wharton and Marc Guehi due to injury. Also absent will be Glasner’s signature Boss jumper.
Despite Saturday’s celebrations, Glasner and his family skipped the post-match karaoke session hosted by chairman Steve Parish. “If I start singing, everyone would leave,” he laughed. He also missed Austria’s win in the Eurovision Song Contest that night, saying, “I read about it – it was a good weekend for Austria!”
Following the club’s FA Cup win and qualification for European football, co-owner Steve Parish acknowledged the challenge ahead and noted Glasner’s experience in Europe, having won the Europa League with Eintracht Frankfurt in 2022. “We’ll give it a go,” said Parish. “Who knows?”
But Glasner is keeping his focus firmly on the present. “It makes no sense to start thinking about the Europa League now. That would be a big mistake,” he said. “My focus is on how we can improve as a team. There won’t be massive changes.”
He continued, “Financially, Crystal Palace won’t be a top-four club in England. But since promotion in 2013, this club has steadily progressed. We don’t want to be a one-off success and disappear. The planning shouldn’t be: ‘Now we’re in Europe, let’s go crazy.’ That’s how things collapse.”
“This club’s pathway didn’t start with me. It began with the new ownership in 2010. We’ve earned a special reward by qualifying for Europe, but we’re not abandoning our strategy. The next step is to consistently aim for a place between 8th and 12th in the Premier League.”
As for his future, Glasner downplayed talks of a contract extension, saying, “I have one more year on my contract, so there’s no rush.”
Adam Wharton, who suffered a concussion, will also miss the season finale at Liverpool, though Marc Guehi could be fit to return.
