Callum Wilson Reflects on Newcastle Future as Contract Nears Expiry
Callum Wilson has spoken candidly about his uncertain future at Newcastle United, with his current contract set to expire in the coming weeks.
The 33-year-old striker, who joined from Bournemouth in 2020, hasn’t met the appearance criteria needed to trigger an automatic one-year extension—leaving the final decision in the hands of the club’s hierarchy.
Wilson has spent much of the last couple of seasons playing backup to Alexander Isak, with persistent injury issues limiting his involvement.
Since returning from a hamstring injury in February, he’s remained fit, though goals have been hard to come by—he’s yet to score in 17 Premier League appearances this campaign.
Despite the lack of minutes and goals, Wilson insists he’s still enjoying life at Newcastle and remains motivated.
Speaking on the High Performance Podcast, he shared his mindset as he approaches the twilight of his career.
“I’m in a good place now. Financially I’m stable, so that’s not a concern. I know I can still provide for my family,” Wilson said. “But I still feel that hunger.
Even when Alex [Isak] is scoring, I’m frustrated if I’m not starting. That tells me I’m not ready to walk away from the game just yet.
“I’d love to retire on my own terms, not because of an injury. I’ve been fit for four-and-a-half months now but only played around 250–300 minutes.
That’s frustrating. You don’t want your career to just fade out, especially after working so hard to get here.
“For now, I’m just enjoying playing, smiling, and seeing what the future holds. What’s meant to be, will be.”
Leeds and Others Monitoring Situation
Leeds United are reportedly among the clubs interested in Wilson as they prepare for life back in the Premier League.
The Yorkshire side have also been linked with Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff, as manager Daniel Farke aims to strengthen his squad for top-flight survival.
Wilson started for Newcastle in their recent defeat to Arsenal, stepping in for the injured Isak.
However, with younger talents like William Osula waiting in the wings, Wilson’s long-term place in Eddie Howe’s squad is far from guaranteed.
Speaking about Wilson’s situation last month, Howe commented: “Physically, I see the Callum Wilson of old, which is great to see.
He’s stayed fit for a good period, which is brilliant. As for his future, we’ll have to wait and see how he performs and what happens next.”
Wilson’s future may be unclear, but his commitment and passion for the game remain unmistakably strong.
