Romaine Mundle Eyes Wembley Dream as Sunderland Chase Premier League Promotion
Romaine Mundle is eager to play a role in Sunderland’s promotion bid at Wembley this Saturday, hoping to repay the unwavering support of the fans by helping the club secure a return to the Premier League.
Sunderland face Sheffield United in the crucial play-off final, and for Mundle, the chance to feature on such a grand stage would be a dream come true.
The 22-year-old winger recently returned from a hamstring injury, coming on during extra time in the semi-final, and is hopeful of making an impact in the final.
“It’ll be a special moment for me,” Mundle told BBC Radio Newcastle. “Playing at Wembley is a dream for any footballer.
I’ve been there as a fan—saw Spurs play Barcelona and Messi was on the pitch. To now be potentially playing there myself, in front of my family, would mean everything.”
Mundle reflected on the strong bond between the club and its supporters, calling Sunderland a “family club” and expressing his desire to give back to the fans who have shown him so much support during a challenging season.
“The fans have been incredible. They travel all over, they care deeply, and they’ve backed us the whole way.
To win promotion wouldn’t just mean a lot to me personally—it’s for them. They deserve to see this club in the Premier League again.”
Reflecting on his debut season with Sunderland, Mundle spoke about the challenge of stepping into Jack Clarke’s role and dealing with his first major injury.
“I was nervous at first, stepping in for someone like Jack, who had done so well here,” he said. “But I focused on playing my game, and things started to click. Then the injury hit.
It was tough, my first real one, but I had great support from the club and the people around me.
Rehab wasn’t easy, but I worked hard every day, often alongside Browney, who was also recovering. We kept each other going.”
Mundle also addressed the penalty incident earlier this season when he stepped up to take a spot-kick against Millwall but was overruled by Luke O’Nien, who missed.
“There was just a bit of miscommunication,” Mundle explained. “I was frustrated at the time, but I apologised after. If it comes down to penalties at Wembley, I’m ready to step up.”
As the final approaches, Mundle is focused, motivated, and dreaming of a victorious return to the Premier League with Sunderland.
