Peter Reid Backs Sunderland to Beat Sheffield United and Secure Premier League Promotion
Former Sunderland manager Peter Reid has backed the Black Cats to edge past Sheffield United in this weekend’s Championship play-off final and secure a long-awaited return to the Premier League.
Sunderland finished fourth in the league table, trailing Chris Wilder’s Blades by 14 points. However, a thrilling semi-final victory over Coventry City has set up a showdown at Wembley, where the Wearside club will have the chance to end their top-flight exile dating back to 2017.
Reid, who led Sunderland from 1995 to 2002, confirmed he’ll be at Wembley to support Régis Le Bris’ side and shared his excitement about the match.
Reid Predicts 2-1 Sunderland Win
Speaking to the BBC, Reid admitted he’ll be feeling the nerves but is looking forward to what he expects will be an electric atmosphere.
“I’ll be going,” he said. “I’ll be nervous. Not sure I’ll make it to Trafalgar Square the night before—it’s probably a bit too lively for me these days!
“But I love the passion. The atmosphere will be incredible because the Blades bring great support too. It’ll be something special.”
As for his prediction? “I’ll go for 2-1 to Sunderland,” Reid added.
A Crucial Opportunity for Sunderland
Since their relegation from the Premier League in 2017, Sunderland have faced a turbulent spell, including stints in League One. Under Tony Mowbray, they reached the play-offs last year but fell short in the semi-finals.
Now, under the guidance of Le Bris, Sunderland have gone one step further. Dan Ballard’s dramatic 123rd-minute goal secured a 3-2 aggregate win over Coventry, sending the Black Cats to Wembley with renewed belief.
A Tight Matchup Expected at Wembley
While Sunderland’s form dipped late in the regular season, their fourth-place finish meant their spot in the play-offs was already secured. Earlier in the campaign, both sides claimed a home win in their league meetings, with an aggregate score of 2-2—underscoring how closely matched these teams are.
Sheffield United may be slight favourites, but Sunderland have shown grit and quality when it matters most. With promotion on the line, this clash is set to be fiercely contested.
