Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has confirmed that Alexander Isak has a “chance” of being fit in time for their crucial Premier League finale against Everton on Sunday.
A win at St James’ Park would secure the Magpies a spot in next season’s Champions League.
Isak missed the recent clash against Arsenal due to a groin problem, raising concerns about his availability for the weekend. Speaking on Friday morning, Howe offered a cautious update:
“Alex is doing okay. He hasn’t trained with us yet, but he’s made good progress,” Howe said. “The next few days will be key in determining whether he can play.
There’s a chance, but we’ll only use him if he’s fully fit. A decision will be made tomorrow.”
Isak has been in outstanding form this season, scoring 27 goals and notching six assists in 41 appearances.
His performances have reportedly attracted interest from Liverpool, with incoming manager Arne Slot looking to strengthen the club’s attacking options.
Looking ahead to the match, Howe believes Isak still has the potential to make one final impact this season.
“I definitely think there’s one more big moment in him,” Howe said. “We’d love to have him available.
But he needs to be at his best physically to contribute—he’s a dynamic, electric player when fully fit. We won’t risk him if he’s not ready.”
When asked whether Newcastle could cope without their star striker, Howe expressed confidence in the team’s depth.
“I am confident,” he said. “We’re never reliant on just one player. Our strength lies in the collective. While individual talent is important, we pride ourselves on being a team-first club.
“If Alex can’t play, it’ll be an opportunity for someone else to rise to the occasion.”
