Sunderland Defender Luke O’Nien Injured Early in Championship Play-Off Final
Sunderland suffered a major setback just minutes into Saturday’s Championship play-off final as defender Luke O’Nien was forced off with a shoulder injury.
O’Nien dislocated his shoulder in the second minute after landing awkwardly during an aerial clash.
He required oxygen on the pitch and, despite receiving treatment, was unable to continue. However, he managed to walk off the field unaided.
BBC Radio Newcastle pundit and former Sunderland forward Marco Gabbiadini quickly sensed the severity of the injury, noting O’Nien’s unusual reaction.
“This is an immediate concern for Sunderland. Luke O’Nien never stays down like that,” Gabbiadini said. “It’s a big loss, but thankfully the bench looks stronger than in previous matches.”
The injury occurred after O’Nien jumped to challenge Kieffer Moore, whose powerful header was denied by a stunning save from Antony Patterson, keeping the score level.
Sky Sports later confirmed the shoulder dislocation, which medical staff were able to relocate on the spot. O’Nien was later seen accompanied by his wife on the way to the medical room.
Chris Mepham came on to replace O’Nien, but was unable to prevent Sheffield United from taking the lead.

Sheffield United nearly doubled their advantage when Harrison Burrows smashed in a volley from the edge of the box. However, VAR intervened, ruling the goal out as Vini Souza was offside and obstructing Patterson’s view.
