Tommy Watson Bids Emotional Farewell After Firing Sunderland to the Premier League
After sending Sunderland back to the Premier League with a dramatic last-minute winner, Tommy Watson declared: “I think I’ll be a legend at the club after that!”
The 18-year-old, who will join Brighton this summer, has faced a tough few weeks—including being booed by some fans after his departure was confirmed in April. But Watson, a lifelong Sunderland supporter, signed off in the most unforgettable way by curling in a 95th-minute goal to seal a 2-1 victory over Sheffield United at Wembley, ending the club’s eight-year absence from the top flight.
“I’m happy to leave on a high note,” said Watson. “There have been some really tough times, but my girlfriend, my family, and the lads—especially Luke—have been incredible.”
“So many people said it would end like this, and I couldn’t have dreamed of a better way. Today I’m still a Sunderland player, and I think I’ve just become a club legend.”
Sunderland trailed 1-0 at the break after Tyrese Campbell put Sheffield United ahead. But manager Regis Le Bris made crucial substitutions, including Watson and Patrick Roberts, both of whom played key roles in Eliezer Mayenda’s equaliser before Watson scored the stunning winner in stoppage time.
Describing the moment, Watson said: “It was surreal. My shirt came off, I was in the crowd—it was unbelievable. The coaching staff told me not to rush, that I had time to make an impact. Once we scored the first, I just knew we’d win.”
Watson, who’s been with Sunderland since the age of five or six and has two younger brothers in the club’s academy, called it a dream come true.
“I’ve been to Wembley as a fan when we lost. To win here and play such a big part—it’s incredible,” he said. “I hope my brothers see this and feel inspired.”
He also praised veteran teammate Luke O’Nien: “Luke’s been a massive influence, not just for me but for so many young players. He’s a role model in every way and deserves to play in the Premier League.”
“Next year, I’ll be watching Sunderland in the Premier League as a legend—that’ll be something special.”
