Nottingham Forest Fall to Chelsea as Questions Linger Over Nuno’s Future
Nottingham Forest wrapped up their Premier League campaign with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Chelsea at the City Ground, missing out on Champions League and Europa League qualification.
Instead, the club will compete in the UEFA Conference League next season.
Despite the setback, Forest’s season has still exceeded expectations. Once tipped to battle relegation, they’ve impressed under Nuno Espirito Santo, with standout performances from Matz Sels—who clinched the Golden Glove—Chris Wood, Anthony Elanga, and others.
Still, uncertainty looms over Espirito Santo’s future amid reports linking him with a move to Roma, where he’s reportedly been offered a two-year deal to succeed Claudio Ranieri.
When asked by Sky Sports whether he would stay at Forest, Nuno offered a vague response:
“This is not the moment to talk about me. It’s time to think about the club and what’s next.”
Sources close to Forest suggest owner Evangelos Marinakis is keen for Nuno to sign a new contract, implying any departure would likely be the manager’s decision, not the club’s.
While his reluctance to comment may have been a show of respect for his players’ efforts, it also added fuel to speculation over his potential exit.
Discussions with the club hierarchy are expected soon, which should clarify his intentions.
Reflecting on the season, Nuno praised his squad’s commitment but admitted they fell just short of the top-four goal:
“The players gave everything.
We started well, controlled the game, but in the second half, we rushed things. Anxiety took over and it just wasn’t enough.”
Forest had chances against Chelsea but couldn’t convert, and Levi Colwill’s goal proved decisive. It was a tough blow, especially with the top-four spot within reach before kick-off.
Now, the focus shifts to the summer. With European football ahead, Forest will need to strengthen the squad. Targets like James McAtee and Liam Delap have already emerged, giving fans reason for optimism in the months ahead.
