“Kalvin Phillips Breaks Silence with Heartfelt Goodbye After Tough Season at Ipswich
The future remains uncertain for former England international Kalvin Phillips.
Phillips has expressed his frustration after a season marred by injuries at Ipswich Town. The ex-Leeds United midfielder moved to Portman Road last August, following a spell where he fell out of favour at Manchester City.
Despite his efforts, the 29-year-old, who also had a disappointing loan stint at West Ham United last season, couldn’t help the Tractor Boys avoid relegation.
Under Kieran McKenna, Ipswich finished 19th, with Phillips making just 14 league starts. His final appearance came in their 2-2 draw against Everton on May 3.
After Ipswich’s final-day loss to West Ham, Phillips took to Instagram to say goodbye:
“A frustrating end to a tough season. I just wanted to say thank you @IpswichTown.
Thank you to the fans for making me and my family feel so loved after a difficult two years. Thanks to the staff and players — an incredible group I enjoyed being around every day.
Special thanks to the manager, a great leader and person who supported me on and off the pitch. He helped me believe in myself again.
I’m confident Ipswich will be back where they belong very soon, and I wish everyone at the club the best.”
Manchester City paid £45 million for Phillips in summer 2022, but the midfielder has struggled with form, fitness, and adjusting to Pep Guardiola’s style.
Phillips still has three years left on his City contract, but what lies ahead is unclear. Rumours have linked him with a return to Leeds, though his high wages could complicate any potential move.
Meanwhile, Ipswich manager McKenna has remained noncommittal about Phillips’ future with the club.
Earlier this month, McKenna said:
“I’ve had very few conversations with players about next season so far. Those talks will happen soon — probably next week or in the days after the season ends. We’ll see what develops.”
