Jobe Bellingham Praises Regis Le Bris After Helping Sunderland Secure Premier League Promotion
Jobe Bellingham has credited Sunderland head coach Régis Le Bris for playing a key role in his development this season, following the club’s dramatic return to the Premier League.
The 19-year-old midfielder was instrumental in Sunderland’s impressive campaign, which saw them finish fourth in the Championship and earn promotion through the play-offs after victories over Coventry City and Sheffield United.
His standout performances earned him the Championship Young Player of the Year award and attracted interest from top European clubs, including Borussia Dortmund.
Reflecting on his growth this season, Bellingham spoke to Sky Sports about the positive impact of Le Bris.
“There were a lot of factors that influenced the season,” he said. “The managerial change brought some inconsistency, and I played in several different positions.
But that’s not an excuse—I don’t need one. It’s just part of the development process.
“I felt more settled at the club this year, and that really came through in my performances. What made the biggest difference was the confidence the manager showed in me.
Right from the start, he told me he wanted me to play as a number eight. That’s my favourite and best position—it allows me to express myself and contribute to the team.”
On helping Sunderland return to the top flight for the first time in eight years, Bellingham shared how much the achievement means to him and the squad.
“The memories we’ve made with the fans in the last few weeks will stay with me forever,” he said. “It means everything—to the supporters, the staff, and us players.
“This is what we’ve all been working toward. Every player who’s joined this club in recent years has made it clear that getting Sunderland back to the Premier League is the goal.
Many tried and didn’t succeed, so I’m proud to say I was part of the group that finally did it.”
Bellingham also spoke about the belief that carried the team through tough times and how the squad defied outside doubts.
“You have to believe,” he said. “With fans like ours and a team like this, it’s impossible not to.
Sure, we hit a rough patch, and people questioned our momentum. Some said we were too inexperienced, but we proved that wrong.
“Experience is important, but at Sunderland, young players are trusted. We’ve learned by playing—and by failing.
We’ve had setbacks together, but we’ve grown from them. Today, every player has made a name for themselves, and I’m just really proud to be part of this team.”
