West Ham Step Up Midfield Overhaul with Interest in Raphael Onyedika and Morten Frendrup
West Ham United are wasting no time in addressing a key area of need, actively pursuing fresh midfield options ahead of the 2024/25 season.
Despite the campaign wrapping up just days ago—with Jarrod Bowen starring in a 3-1 win over Ipswich Town—plans are already in motion at the London Stadium.
The club is clearly targeting youthful, high-energy midfielders to inject life into a squad that often looked sluggish under Graham Potter.
One potential arrival is Club Brugge’s Raphael Onyedika. Reports suggest West Ham may be edging closer to a deal, especially after the Belgian side agreed terms to sign Hamburg’s Ludovit Reis, potentially as Onyedika’s replacement. The Hammers have also been linked with Ardon Jashari, another dynamic midfield talent from Brugge who impressed during this season’s Champions League with his range and intelligence in deep-lying roles.
Meanwhile, Genoa’s Morten Frendrup has also emerged as a serious target. According to Give Me Sport, West Ham have initiated contact with the Serie A club, who are believed to be open to selling the tough-tackling Denmark international for around £17 million.
Frendrup Responds to West Ham Interest
Frendrup, known for his ball-winning prowess and box-to-box mobility, could serve as both a defensive midfielder (No. 6) and a central midfielder (No. 8)—a dual-purpose addition Potter would greatly value.
Speaking to Give Me Sport, Frendrup addressed the speculation for the first time. While he expressed commitment to Genoa, he didn’t shy away from acknowledging the appeal of the Premier League.
“I’m flattered by links to some big clubs,” said Frendrup. “But my only focus right now is on Genoa. It’s important to stay grounded and in the present. Of course, it’s nice to see your name associated with Premier League and European clubs.”
A boyhood Liverpool fan, Frendrup admired Steven Gerrard growing up, though his gritty playing style has drawn comparisons to former Reds enforcer Javier Mascherano.
“I watched a lot of Premier League football as a kid, especially Liverpool. Steven Gerrard was the player I followed the most,” he said. “In Denmark, most people either support Liverpool or Manchester United.”
Competition for Frendrup Heating Up
West Ham aren’t the only club monitoring Frendrup. AC Milan and Fiorentina are also keen to keep the 24-year-old in Italy, while Premier League side Brentford—managed by fellow Dane Thomas Frank—have also shown interest. Brentford’s success has long been underpinned by a core of Danish talent, and Frendrup would be a natural fit.
Former Genoa manager Alberto Gilardino praised Frendrup earlier in the season, saying: “Morten can play anywhere in midfield. He’s quick, dynamic, and a ball-winner. He’s also very dependable—a real game-changer.”
With the transfer window just opening, West Ham’s midfield revamp is clearly underway—and Morten Frendrup could be a central figure in that rebuild.
