West Ham Seal First Summer Signing as Celtic Star Daniel Cummings Joins Potter’s Youth Revolution
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that West Ham United have completed their first signing of the summer transfer window, securing the signature of highly-rated Celtic forward Daniel Cummings.
Manager Graham Potter, along with head of recruitment Kyle Macaulay, had made it clear they wanted to lower the average age of West Ham’s squad. That ambition is now taking shape. After parting ways with four veteran players—who together made over 800 appearances—the Hammers have turned to 19-year-old Cummings to kickstart their rebuild.
The young striker, a product of Celtic’s academy, was recently spotted at the London Stadium during West Ham’s final home match of the season, signaling the move was imminent.
Romano Gives Signature ‘Here We Go’
Cummings had been on West Ham’s radar since January, with talks initially focused on a pre-contract agreement. According to Romano, the deal is now complete:
“Daniel Cummings will join West Ham on July 1st. Agreement done and here we go! Celtic talent has scored 30 goals this season and made his Champions League debut at Villa Park. Medical complete and deal done. Celtic will receive €300k (£250k) in training compensation.”
Rodgers Tried to Block the Move
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers was reportedly furious upon learning that Cummings was in discussions with West Ham. In an effort to persuade the young forward to stay, Rodgers gave him his senior debut in the Champions League and appealed to his representatives for patience.
Despite those efforts, Cummings chose to make the switch south, a move that has long been in the pipeline.
Not an Academy Signing – Cummings Set for First Team Role
There had been speculation in both Glasgow and East London that Cummings was signed to join West Ham’s Academy. However, Hammers News can confirm this is not the case.
Cummings was recruited with a view to being part of Potter’s first-team setup, not the development squad. The decision was influenced by West Ham assistant coach Billy Reid and recruitment lead Kyle Macaulay, both Scots who have closely followed Cummings’ rise.
The striker is expected to feature heavily in West Ham’s preseason, offering fans a first glimpse of his potential under Potter’s system.
Squad Overhaul Underway
Cummings’ arrival coincides with a major reshuffle in West Ham’s forward line. Danny Ings has been released, loan signing Evan Ferguson will return to Brighton, and veteran striker Michail Antonio may also be on the move. Additionally, doubts remain over Niclas Füllkrug’s future, with Potter informing the German that he will not be first-choice next season.
With Cummings stepping in as part of this transition, he will be given a real opportunity to earn minutes and make his mark in the Premier League.
