Cristian Romero has become a central figure of discussion at Tottenham Hotspur in recent months, both for his performances on the pitch and the speculation surrounding his future.
The Argentine defender has been linked with a potential summer move to La Liga, with Atlético Madrid reportedly showing interest. However, Romero’s value to Ange Postecoglou’s side was underscored by his Man of the Match performance in Spurs’ Europa League final victory over Manchester United.
Known for his aggressive and combative style of defending, Romero didn’t hold back in the final, getting into a physical tussle with United’s Harry Maguire. His tough approach may frustrate opponents, but it’s a key part of what makes him so effective.
Romero Reveals Which Teammate He’d Hate to Face
Romero recently shared some insight into who he thinks would be a nightmare to play against—and surprisingly, he named one of his own teammates: Richarlison.
Speaking to journalist Gastón Edul, Romero said:
“I think Richarlison is also another pain in the neck, but I know him well now. He is a character. But yes, if we met on national team duty, he would be in pain.”
The two South Americans have clashed in the past—Romero once famously floored Richarlison with a crunching tackle when Tottenham faced his former club, Everton. Now teammates, Romero has a better appreciation for Richarlison’s unique style and presence.
Richarlison’s Future at Spurs in Question
Despite impressing in the Europa League final with arguably his best performance in a Spurs shirt, Richarlison’s time in North London has largely been hampered by injuries. And with limited minutes under Postecoglou, his long-term future at the club remains uncertain.
According to TBR Football, Everton are interested in re-signing the 27-year-old and have reportedly offered him a guaranteed starting role should he return to Goodison Park. With the 2026 World Cup looming, regular playing time will be a priority for the Brazilian forward.
Postecoglou has publicly praised Richarlison, describing him as a player of “quality,” and there’s a strong belief that he would’ve played a bigger role this season had injuries not derailed his campaign.
Nevertheless, Tottenham may be forced to weigh up any serious offers this summer and decide whether to cash in or continue betting on Richarlison’s potential.
