Jordan Henderson Tipped for Sunderland Return After Premier League Promotion
Following their promotion to the Premier League, Sunderland are now focused on strengthening their squad for the upcoming season — and a familiar face could be making a return to the Stadium of Light.
Ajax midfielder Jordan Henderson has emerged as a serious transfer target for the Black Cats.
Just two days ago, reports from the Dutch media suggested both Sunderland and Rangers were well-positioned to land the former England international.
Now, Dutch football expert Chris Woerts has claimed that Sunderland are indeed set to be Henderson’s next destination.
Speaking on De Oranjezomer, with his comments relayed by Voetbal Primeur, Woerts expressed strong confidence that the 34-year-old will rejoin his boyhood club.
Notably, Woerts has past ties to Sunderland, having served as the club’s head of marketing between January 2009 and February 2010.
While discussing Barcelona starlet Lamine Yamal’s new long-term deal, Woerts pivoted to Henderson’s situation, noting his high salary and uncertain future at Ajax.
According to Transfermarkt, Henderson still has over 13 months left on his contract, but Woerts is adamant he will depart this summer.
The midfielder began his career at Sunderland, progressing through their youth system and making over 70 senior appearances before his high-profile move to Liverpool in 2011.
Now, with his time in the Eredivisie nearing an end, a return to Wearside appears increasingly likely.
“In the Eredivisie, one of the highest-paid players is Jordan Henderson. He earns around €4.6 million per year,” said Woerts.
“He’s leaving Ajax — I’m certain of that. And I’m sure he’s going back to his old love: Sunderland. They were promoted to the Premier League last weekend. That’s where he grew up, and he’s going back to his roots.”
If the move materialises, it would mark a full-circle moment for Henderson, potentially bringing valuable experience and leadership to a young Sunderland squad as they prepare for life in the Premier League.
