Kevin Nolan Reunites with Kamarai Swyer at Northampton Town After West Ham Exit
When Kevin Nolan learned that Kamarai Swyer was available to leave West Ham United, the former Hammers coach acted quickly, reaching out to offer the talented youngster a fresh opportunity in League One with Northampton Town.
Nolan, who previously captained West Ham as a player and later served four years as an assistant at the London Stadium, is now focused on reshaping a Northampton side he took over in December. The Cobblers narrowly avoided relegation last season, finishing just five points above the drop zone.
Now, Nolan is hoping that Swyer can help turn the tide and establish the team as a stable mid-table force. The 22-year-old forward signed a permanent deal with Northampton on Friday, just weeks after a standout Premier League 2 campaign saw him nominated for Player of the Month. No West Ham U21 player had more goal contributions than Swyer, who finished the season with 18 goals and 10 assists.
Swyer Reflects on West Ham Departure and Move to Northampton
Speaking to Northampton Town’s official website, Swyer expressed excitement about the new chapter in his career and highlighted the importance of reuniting with Nolan in making his decision.
“It feels amazing to be here,” Swyer said. “Playing in the U21s at West Ham was great, but making that step up to first-team football in a strong league is really exciting.”
He continued, “Nolan was a big factor in my decision. Knowing the manager already helps a lot when entering a new environment. Having that relationship in place gives me confidence.”
Describing his playing style, Swyer said: “I’m definitely a versatile player – whether it’s as a number 10, off the left or right. I try to bring energy, creativity, goals and assists to the team.”
He also spoke positively about the club’s ambitions: “The conversations I’ve had with the gaffer have been really promising. I can see his vision for the season, and I’m excited to be part of that.”
Though his loan spell at Crawley Town last season was limited to just six league appearances, Swyer views the experience as an important learning step.
“That first loan was valuable for my development,” he said. “I didn’t get as much game time as I’d hoped, but it taught me a lot, and I’ll carry those lessons with me.”
Nolan Sees Bright Future for Swyer in League One
Nolan, meanwhile, is enthusiastic about what Swyer brings to the squad.
“Kamarai is a very talented young player with huge potential,” said Nolan. “Having worked with him before, I know what he can do. He’s hungry, technically sharp, loves to take players on, and has the right attitude. We’re thrilled to have him here.”
He added, “This is the right moment in his career. He’s coming off a brilliant season in Premier League 2, leading West Ham’s U21s in goal contributions. Now, he’s ready to take the next step, and we’re going to help him get there.”
As West Ham begin shaping their future with emerging talents like George Earthy and Ollie Scarles, Swyer will look to carve out his own path in the EFL – this time under the guidance of a familiar and trusted mentor.
