David Moyes Green Lights Everton Move for £93,000-a-Week Striker Amid DCL U-Turn
Everton are looking to strengthen their attack ahead of the next season, as manager David Moyes aims to guide the Toffees back into the Premier League’s top half. Journalist Graeme Bailey has revealed that the club is closely monitoring Tammy Abraham’s situation, as the striker plans to leave Roma.
This season, Everton managed only 42 Premier League goals—more than only the three relegated teams—highlighting a significant scoring issue despite having one of the league’s best defenses. With a joint-fourth-best defensive record, the lack of firepower in front of goal has become a major concern on Merseyside, and urgent reinforcements are needed to restore Everton’s status as a competitive side.
Bailey reports that Moyes is a fan of Abraham, who could potentially replace Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Calvert-Lewin’s contract expires this summer, and after a reported change of heart, the long-serving striker appears set to leave Everton following nine years at Goodison Park. Meanwhile, Armando Broja will return to Chelsea after a failed loan spell, leaving Beto as Everton’s only senior striker on the books.
Consequently, Moyes is searching for a reliable lead forward, and Abraham fits the profile. Bailey notes that Moyes has admired the Chelsea academy graduate for some time, having pursued him previously during his stint at West Ham United. The recent takeover of Everton by The Friedkin Group, who also own Roma, could smooth the path for a transfer. Speaking to Everton News, Bailey said:
“Everton are among the clubs aware of Tammy Abraham’s situation. I’ve heard that David Moyes likes him, and at 27, he’s at a strong age for a striker. An England international with plenty to offer.
“Of course, the fact that Abraham is already under the Friedkin Group’s ownership is a plus, but ultimately the player will decide his next move.”
Abraham scored 21 league goals in 58 appearances for Chelsea before moving to Roma, where he struggled to secure a spot ahead of Timo Werner.
With his Premier League career still having potential, and an impressive 2019/20 season where he netted 15 goals in 34 games, a move to Everton’s new stadium could provide the perfect opportunity for both Abraham and the club to rejuvenate their ambitions.
