Cyriel Dessers admits missing out on silverware with Rangers this season was a tough pill to swallow. However, the Nigerian striker says his return to the international stage helped ease the disappointment.
Dessers finished as the Premiership’s top scorer and earned a surprise recall to the Nigerian national team—the Super Eagles—thanks to his impressive form at Ibrox.
He marked his return by scoring in a recent friendly against Ghana in London and says the moment was a personal highlight.
“It’s always painful when you fall short of winning a major trophy at a club like Rangers,” Dessers said. “But on a personal level, I had some great moments this season. I stayed fit and getting called up by Nigeria again was definitely one of the best things to happen to me. I’m really happy to be back with the national team.”
Dessers also shared his disappointment over the departure of his former Nigeria teammate Leon Balogun, who was released by Rangers at the end of the season.
“Leon and I are still in touch—we text regularly,” he revealed. “He had a great season, especially in competitions like the Europa League, where he showed his quality. I know he still has hopes of continuing with the Nigerian national team, and I really hope he gets that opportunity.”
