Leeds United Face Major Challenge to Keep Junior Firpo Amid Interest from Lyon, per Fabrizio Romano

Leeds United’s efforts to retain left-back Junior Firpo have hit a new obstacle, with French powerhouse Lyon reportedly making a formal proposal to sign the former Barcelona defender on a free transfer, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Firpo played a key role in Leeds’ Championship-winning campaign, which saw them amass 100 points and secure a return to the Premier League at the second attempt.

However, his standout performances have drawn attention from top European clubs, casting doubt on his future at Elland Road.

The 28-year-old has already been linked with a return to former club Real Betis, as well as interest from AC Milan.

Now, Lyon are said to be pushing hard to secure his signature—an outcome that would be a significant setback to Leeds’ Premier League preparations.

Firpo ended the season with an impressive four goals and ten assists, finishing as the Championship’s top assist provider among defenders and ranking sixth overall.

With a wealth of experience—including 62 La Liga appearances for Betis and Barcelona, 10 Champions League outings, and 11 international caps for the Dominican Republic—his departure would be a notable loss for Daniel Farke’s side.

Despite reports linking Leeds with several potential signings, including Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, Sheffield United midfielder Gustavo Hamer, and Rennes forward Arnaud Kalimuendo, no new arrivals have yet been confirmed.

If Firpo does leave, the club may need to dip into the £100 million transfer budget allocated by owners 49ers Enterprises to find a suitable replacement.

One potential target is Liverpool’s Kostas Tsimikas, whose future at Anfield is uncertain with the Reds reportedly close to signing Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez. That move could clear the path for Firpo’s exit and force Leeds to act quickly in the transfer market.
