Ipswich Town face a pivotal summer as they prepare for life back in the Championship following their relegation from the Premier League.
Kieran McKenna’s side enjoyed an impressive rise from League One to the top flight with back-to-back promotions, but their brief Premier League stint came to an end, prompting a crucial rebuild at Portman Road ahead of the new campaign.
With changes expected both in and out of the squad during the transfer window, fan pundit Adam Wilkin from Football League World believes defender Cameron Burgess could be one of the notable departures this summer.
Burgess Tipped for Summer Exit
“I think Cameron Burgess is probably the player most disappointed after last season,” Wilkin explained.
“Whenever he featured, he was excellent. But with Ipswich investing heavily in Jacob Greaves to be the long-term option at left centre-back, Burgess saw his minutes reduced.”
Burgess’ current contract is set to expire this summer, and with limited opportunities and his Premier League experience now under his belt, he may look for a new challenge elsewhere.
“I don’t think he’ll want to stay just to be a squad player in the Championship,” Wilkin added. “Given his age and having now played at the highest level, I think he’s one of the likeliest players to move on—and I’d be really sad to see that happen. He’s consistently stepped up, and he proved me wrong at every level. He did brilliantly in the Championship and rarely put a foot wrong in the Premier League.”
Could Burgess Still Play a Key Role?
Despite his reduced role last season—making just 18 Premier League appearances compared to 39 in the Championship the year before—Burgess could still have a big part to play if he remains at the club.
With Ipswich returning to the second tier, he may regain a regular starting spot under McKenna, especially given his previous performances at that level.
The club has confirmed they’ve offered the 29-year-old a new contract, and negotiations are ongoing. However, if a deal isn’t reached, Burgess is expected to attract strong interest from across the Championship.
