Jobe Bellingham Edges Closer to Sunderland Exit as Dortmund Pursuit Intensifies
Jobe Bellingham looks increasingly likely to leave Sunderland this summer, with Borussia Dortmund stepping up their efforts to bring the midfielder to Germany.
According to reports from Sky Sports Germany and German newspaper Bild, the 19-year-old has decided he wants to join Dortmund, having carefully considered his options following Sunderland’s Championship play-off final victory over Sheffield United at Wembley.
Dortmund have been working behind the scenes for several months to lay the foundation for a move, hoping to see Jobe follow in the footsteps of his older brother, Jude Bellingham.
The Bundesliga giants faced strong late interest from Eintracht Frankfurt—another club set to play in the Champions League next season—but now appear to be leading the race.
However, a transfer is not yet finalized. While Bellingham remains under contract at Sunderland until 2028, the two clubs have yet to agree on a transfer fee.
Bild reports that Dortmund are reluctant to pay more than €25 million, while Sunderland are holding out for a higher fee.
The Black Cats are in a strong negotiating position but are unlikely to block the move if their valuation is met—especially given Bellingham’s loyalty last summer, when he turned down Premier League interest to help push for promotion.
A sale would mark a significant profit for Sunderland, who signed Bellingham two years ago. However, Birmingham City would also benefit, due to a sell-on clause believed to be worth around 15%.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Sunderland are pushing for the full release clause—believed to be around €40 million—to be triggered.
Dortmund have made their interest clear, with several high-ranking officials delivering personal pitches to Bellingham and his representatives.
The teenager also visited Eintracht Frankfurt during the decision-making process, but all signs now point to a move to Signal Iduna Park.
Bellingham Reflects on Sunderland’s Promotion
Following Sunderland’s dramatic play-off final win, Bellingham expressed his pride in the team during a post-match interview with Sky Sports.
“When you’ve got supporters like this and a group of lads like that, you have to believe,” he said.
“I don’t know what to say to you. But yeah, I always believe. I know people doubted us, and that’s understandable.
We lost a few games. People talk about momentum, but I think we did enough and we showed enough throughout the season for people to at least give us some credit going into the playoffs.”
