Lee Hendrie Warns Ipswich Fans Over Kieran McKenna’s Premier League Links
Former Aston Villa midfielder and current Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie has expressed concern for Ipswich Town supporters, warning that Kieran McKenna’s potential move to the Premier League could become a reality sooner rather than later.
With Brentford reportedly targeting McKenna as a replacement for Thomas Frank—should Frank take over at Tottenham Hotspur—Hendrie believes the domino effect could leave Ipswich without the manager who led them to a stunning top-flight promotion.
According to Football Insider, Spurs’ interest in Brentford boss Thomas Frank has “accelerated”, especially if Ange Postecoglou exits the club. If that chain reaction unfolds, Ipswich may struggle to hold on to their 39-year-old head coach.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Hendrie said McKenna’s departure has “been on the cards,” and that Ipswich fans should be seriously concerned.
“It would be a big worry for Ipswich because of what he’s done for the club and how far he’s taken them.
The journey to the Premier League was incredible, and the style of football under him showed real identity. He’s still young and has already been linked with big jobs. A move wouldn’t shock me at all.”
Before last season even began, McKenna was linked to top Premier League clubs including Brighton, Chelsea, and even former side Manchester United. While he chose to stay with Ipswich, their survival bid in the Premier League ultimately fell short. Still, many view him as a manager destined for the top level.
“All the best managers want to be in the Premier League,” Hendrie added.
“Brentford is a great club, even without Thomas Frank. If McKenna makes the move, it’s a huge blow to Ipswich.”
‘Have a Backup Plan,’ Hendrie Urges Ipswich Hierarchy
As the Championship off-season progresses, Hendrie believes Ipswich can’t afford to stand still. Should McKenna be lured away, the club must act quickly to stay competitive heading into the 2025/26 campaign.
“They need a contingency plan. Someone ready to step in and continue the progress, because other clubs are already preparing for next season,” he said.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if McKenna left—especially if the Spurs job becomes available. Ipswich fans would be gutted.”
With McKenna at the helm, Ipswich are tipped as early favourites to bounce straight back up to the Premier League. But without him, that trajectory could quickly stall.
As the summer transfer window and managerial carousel heat up, all eyes will be on Kieran McKenna—and whether Ipswich Town can hold on to their prized manager.
