Ange Postecoglou’s journey to the top has never been smooth, despite a career marked by consistent success.
From leading Celtic to multiple titles to claiming the Europa League with Tottenham, Postecoglou has proven himself as a winner. Yet, criticism continues to follow him, and disrespect has lingered throughout his career.
The latest blow came with the news of his sacking from Tottenham. But long before that, even his move from Japan’s Yokohama Marinos to Celtic in 2021 was met with skepticism.
One particularly infamous moment involved talkSPORT host Alan Brazil, who dismissed Postecoglou’s appointment with disbelief.
Alan Brazil’s Dismissive Reaction to Postecoglou’s Celtic Appointment
Despite Postecoglou’s accomplishments in Australia and Japan, Brazil openly mocked the idea of him taking charge at Celtic. Lacking any real knowledge of the coach, Brazil responded on-air with disbelief.
“Breaking news coming out of Scotland,” Brazil said at the time. “Celtic have applied for an exemption for the Yokohama Marinos boss… Posta—what is Postecoglou? Oh, this has got to be a wind-up.”
The clip was later featured in an ABC News Australia profile on Postecoglou’s career, underscoring how dismissive the reaction had been.
Postecoglou, however, remained unfazed. “I grew up in a school yard with a long surname in Australia,” he recalled. “Trust me, I heard every variation of my surname. Nothing they were going to say was going to upset me.”
Brazil Reflects on His Misjudgment
In hindsight, Brazil’s reaction has become something of a punchline—particularly ironic considering he’s a Celtic supporter himself.
Reflecting on the moment during an October 2024 interview with Open Goal, Brazil admitted his mistake.
“I’d never heard of him—and I actually played against him!” he said. “It turns out we faced each other when I was with Wollongong and he was at South Melbourne. Someone sent me the match programme and there he was.”
Brazil acknowledged that Postecoglou went on to prove his critics wrong, especially with his treble-winning season at Celtic.
“He’s done brilliant. Things have been tough at Spurs, but that’s no surprise—it’s never easy there or at Manchester United. But he was fantastic for Celtic.”
Ange Postecoglou may have faced doubt at every stage, but his track record speaks for itself. And now, those early moments of doubt from figures like Brazil serve more as reminders of how far Postecoglou has come—and how wrong the doubters were.
