Ben Crompton Bids Farewell to Sunderland, Praises Fans After His Release
Sunderland defender Ben Crompton has expressed his gratitude to the club and its supporters following his release from the Academy of Light.
The 21-year-old described his three-year spell on Wearside as a “life-changing” experience.
Crompton, who joined Sunderland from Shrewsbury Town in 2022, was one of eight players released at the end of the 2024-25 season.
After the club confirmed his departure, fans flooded social media with messages of support—something that left a lasting impression on the young defender.
“From my experience over the last three years, they’re some of the best fans in the world,” Crompton told The Echo. “They’ve always backed me—whether at matches or online.
It really means a lot, and I do see it. I’m genuinely grateful.”
Although Crompton made just one senior appearance for the Black Cats, he was a regular for Graeme Murty’s U21 side and made a strong impression during a loan spell at
Tamworth, particularly in an FA Cup tie against Premier League opposition. But it’s his personal development off the pitch that stands out the most.
“Moving away at 18 and now leaving at 21, Sunderland has shaped me into the person I am today,” he said. “It’s been my home for a big part of my life and I’ve cherished every moment.”
While being released was disappointing, Crompton sees it as an opportunity rather than a setback. “I’m not the type to dwell on things,” he added.
“I’ve had a strong season, shown what I’m capable of, and I’m excited for what comes next. Sunderland will always hold a special place in my heart—it’s a club full of special people.”
Sunderland Reveal Pre-Season Schedule Ahead of Premier League Return
Sunderland have confirmed their pre-season plans as they prepare for their much-anticipated return to the Premier League after an eight-year absence.
The Black Cats will once again head to the Algarve for a training camp in July, where they are scheduled to play two friendly matches against yet-to-be-confirmed opponents.
Their pre-season begins with a split-squad double-header against Gateshead and South Shields—fixtures that have become a traditional curtain-raiser in recent years.
Following their training camp in Portugal, Régis Le Bris’ side will face Heart of Midlothian at Tynecastle in a testimonial match honoring former Sunderland and Scotland goalkeeper Craig Gordon.
The club’s warm-up fixtures will continue with an away match against Hull City, before returning to the Stadium of Light for a high-profile friendly against Manuel Pellegrini’s Real Betis.
Sunderland are also looking to arrange one final pre-season fixture on the weekend of August 9–10, although details have yet to be finalized.
