Ipswich Town Maintain Talks Over Potential Jens Cajuste Return
Ipswich Town chairman Mark Ashton has confirmed that discussions are ongoing with Jens Cajuste regarding a potential return to Portman Road.
The Swedish international joined the newly-promoted Blues on a season-long loan from Napoli last summer, after a proposed move to Brentford collapsed at the medical stage.
Cajuste, 25, took time to reach peak fitness due to a persistent knee issue, but the composed midfielder ultimately emerged as one of Ipswich’s standout performers during a difficult campaign that ended in relegation.
Had the club avoided the drop, they would have been obligated to make the move permanent for around £10 million. Cajuste remains under contract with Napoli for another three years, though he was not part of their Serie A title-winning squad.
“Jens is a loan player who I think has done really well for us,” said Ashton. “He’s had some injury issues this season, which have been well documented.
“Our conversations with Jens are ongoing. For him to stay here long-term, it would have to be the right fit for us, for him, and for his parent club – and that dialogue continues.”
Cajuste was the only one of Ipswich’s four loan players to feature in their final game of the season, a 3-1 home loss to West Ham.
Asked whether that might signal a chance he could return, manager Kieran McKenna said: “We’ve loved having Jens here, but there’s still quite a bit that would need to happen. We’ll see what the next few weeks bring.”
Cajuste has now played top-flight football in Denmark, France, Italy, and England.
Speaking to the East Anglian Daily Times and Ipswich Star back in March, he said: “We’ll see where it goes. I’ve definitely enjoyed my time here, so that’s all I can say for now.
“I think Suffolk suits me. I’m pretty relaxed and laid-back, so it fits me like a glove. It’s perfect for me.”
