Luizao Opens Up on Uncertain West Ham Future After Impressive Loan Spell in Poland
After a loan spell in Poland and with his future at West Ham United still unresolved, Brazilian defender Luizao admits “everything is still very open” as he considers his next move, which could include a return to his homeland.
It’s been two-and-a-half years since Luizao left São Paulo to join West Ham in a £4 million move, but the 23-year-old centre-back is still waiting to make his first senior appearance for the Premier League club — a debut that may never come.
In search of playing time, Luizao joined Polish side Pogoń Szczecin on loan in January, where he impressed in the Ekstraklasa. Despite this progress, the defender concedes that his dream of establishing himself at West Ham may already have faded.
A Move Luizao Doesn’t Regret
Speaking to UOL Esporte, Luizao reflected on his decision to make the switch to London back in 2023. Despite how things have unfolded, he insists he has no regrets.
“I saw it as a fantastic opportunity for a 20-year-old,” he said. “The project West Ham presented, my dream of playing in the Premier League, and being able to provide financial stability for my family made the offer irresistible.”
Luizao also pointed to the visibility the Premier League provides to players aspiring to reach Brazil’s national team.
“National team coaches look to the Premier League first. Playing there would have put me one step closer to getting on their radar,” he added. “It was a chance I couldn’t pass up. They say some trains only come once.”
Missed Opportunity With Corinthians, Unclear Future at West Ham
West Ham reportedly turned down an offer from Corinthians during the summer of 2024, as the Brazilian club shifted its attention to signing Dutch international Memphis Depay. Talks around Luizao’s potential move faded, and the defender remains in limbo.
Now, his representatives are actively exploring both permanent and loan options, depending on how West Ham choose to proceed — especially after the appointment of Julen Lopetegui as manager, which has further clouded Luizao’s place in the squad.
“My agency is open to negotiating either a loan or a permanent transfer, but the decision ultimately lies with West Ham,” he explained. “They’re open to me returning for pre-season, but also willing to include a purchase clause if the right offer comes along. Nothing is settled yet.”
Reflecting on his early days in East London, Luizao revealed that the original plan was to spend six months adapting with the Under-21 squad before integrating into the senior team. But coaching preferences and internal issues hindered his progress.
“After the initial six months, I was supposed to join the first team,” he said. “But things changed. I ended up with a coach who didn’t really work with younger players. I tried to leave on loan for minutes elsewhere, but internal complications stopped that from happening. It wasn’t until Poland that I finally got consistent game time.”
Now, Luizao stands at a crossroads — with West Ham’s plans unclear, interest from Brazil cooling, and his own ambition of Premier League football hanging in the balance.
