Leeds United target Alex Moreno shares cryptic ‘farewell’ message after talks to make Elland Road switch

Leeds United Drop Major Hint at Incoming Signing Amid Alex Moreno Speculation

Leeds United fans may have just received the biggest indication yet that a new signing could be on the horizon at Elland Road.

After a quiet January transfer window that saw no new arrivals, supporters have had to remain patient into the early stages of the summer market. However, momentum now seems to be building.

Recent reports suggest Leeds are in talks with Udinese over the potential £17 million signing of Slovenian international Jaka Bijol. Meanwhile, the club has reportedly made a £22 million bid for Strasbourg midfielder Habib Diarra. That pursuit, however, appears to have stalled, with the player reportedly preferring a move to one of Europe’s top-tier clubs.

But attention has now shifted to Aston Villa left-back Alex Moreno, with growing speculation that he could be on his way to Leeds following Junior Firpo’s confirmed departure to Real Betis, as announced by Fabrizio Romano.

Moreno Sparks Transfer Buzz with Cryptic Post

Talks between Leeds and Aston Villa over a possible move for Moreno have been reported, and the Spanish defender has now added fuel to the speculation with a mysterious Instagram story.

Posting a photo of himself on a train, Moreno included the caption (translated from Spanish): “When you have a farewell and you don’t know what awaits you.” The message has led many fans to believe a transfer announcement could be imminent.

The 32-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest, is reportedly available for just £5 million—a bargain price for an experienced Premier League defender. Several other English clubs are also said to be interested, but Leeds may be hoping to strike first.

One Major Obstacle: Moreno’s Wages

Despite Moreno being under contract at Villa until 2026, manager Unai Emery is reportedly ready to part ways with the left-back, and Villa supporters seem open to his exit.

However, the biggest hurdle for Leeds may be his wages. According to Salary Sport, Moreno earns £90,000 a week—significantly higher than the current wage structure at Elland Road.

Football insider Graeme Bailey commented on the situation, saying: “I’d be surprised [if Leeds sign Moreno]. He isn’t on small money… but Leeds are getting offered so many players, I’m told.”

Still, with Firpo’s salary now off the books and the possibility of further departures, Leeds could have the financial room to make key signings. And with manager Daniel Farke reportedly prioritizing new full-backs, a deal for Moreno—if the financials can be worked out—could be closer than expected.
