Chris Rigg Continues to Attract Transfer Interest, but Sunderland Exit Seen as Unlikely
Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg remains on the radar of several clubs, but former Black Cats forward Martin Smith believes the teenager is likely to stay put—unless a “crazy” offer comes in.
Rigg has drawn consistent attention from Premier League sides following his rapid rise through Sunderland’s ranks and breakthrough into the first team.
However, Smith is confident that the club’s recent promotion to the Premier League, along with the high-profile departures of Jobe Bellingham and Tommy Watson, makes it more probable that Rigg will remain on Wearside—at least for now.
Martin Smith Shares His View on Rigg’s Future
Speaking on BBC Radio Newcastle’s Total Sport, Smith said:
“I don’t know for sure, but I’d be surprised if he wanted to leave at this point.
He’s had opportunities to go before and chose to stay because he knew he’d get chances in the first team. I think he’s said as much himself.
“To finally reach the Premier League with Sunderland and then walk away would surprise me. But as you say, you never know.
If a massive offer comes in, it could be out of his hands, and the club might tell him, ‘Look, we think you should go.’
“I’d still be surprised, especially after Bellingham and Watson have already been sold.
I’d like to think those two departures will be the main outgoings, bringing in significant funds, and now the focus should shift to strengthening the squad.”
Smith Comments on Sunderland’s Transfer Targets
Smith also weighed in on Sunderland’s transfer strategy, particularly addressing rumors surrounding FC Nantes striker Matthis Abline.
Initially reported to be valued at around £17 million, the French forward has now been priced at over £40 million by his current club—effectively ruling Sunderland out of the race, according to Smith.
“I don’t think that’s a market Sunderland are likely to be involved in. £40 million is a huge amount, and I can’t see us paying that. But there’s always speculation—new names come up daily, and if you follow every link, it’ll drive you mad.
“What’s important is that we do bring players in. Ideally, some with experience, and we should look to invest a bit to strengthen the team.”
