Lucas Paqueta’s Spot-Fixing Case Nears Resolution After Lengthy Saga
Lucas Paqueta’s spot-fixing case has been ongoing for nearly two years, but a resolution could finally be in sight.
The Brazilian international was officially charged by the FA in May 2024, following a 10-month investigation.
After numerous delays, his hearing wrapped up in early June, with a verdict expected in the next four to eight weeks.
Paqueta faces four charges of deliberately receiving yellow cards to manipulate betting markets, as well as two charges of failing to fully cooperate with the investigation.
The 27-year-old midfielder has consistently denied any wrongdoing and has received unwavering support from West Ham throughout the process.
“I’m extremely surprised and upset that the FA has decided to charge me,” Paqueta said in his only public statement after the charges were brought. “For nine months I cooperated with every step of their investigation and provided all the information I could. I deny the charges in full and will fight to clear my name.”
It’s alleged that Paqueta intentionally sought bookings in four different matches to influence betting outcomes in Brazil, reportedly benefitting people close to him.
Now that the hearing is concluded, both Paqueta and West Ham are awaiting the decision, hoping to finally move forward and make crucial plans for the future.
Huge Financial Impact on West Ham
The investigation has had serious financial consequences for both the player and the club.
When the FA’s probe was first revealed, Paqueta was on the verge of an £80 million transfer to Manchester City. That deal fell through, and he remained at West Ham.
Since the charges, Paqueta’s form has dipped. Last season, he failed to register an assist and scored just five goals across all competitions.
West Ham, who paid £51 million to sign him from Lyon in 2022, have been left frustrated by their inability to profit from a planned sale.
That frustration is compounded by financial pressure from PSR (Profit and Sustainability Regulations), which now require them to sell players before they can buy.
The verdict in Paqueta’s case will therefore play a crucial role in determining West Ham’s transfer strategy this summer.
If he is found guilty, there is talk of a possible lifetime ban, which would prevent the club from recouping any value from his sale.
Hope for a Positive Outcome
However, there may be reason for optimism. Journalist and transfer insider Graeme Bailey has shared encouraging news about Paqueta’s situation.
Speaking to TBR Football, Bailey said: “Lucas Paqueta will find out within two weeks about his court case, but we’re fully expecting him to be exonerated or at the very least allowed to continue playing Premier League football next season—meaning he’ll be able to move.”
Such an outcome would be a major relief for all parties. While West Ham are unlikely to secure the £80m fee they nearly received two summers ago, there is hope they can at least recoup their original investment.
Given their current financial position, avoiding a loss on Paqueta is a priority.
If cleared, he could be among several first-team players expected to depart the London Stadium this summer, alongside names like Mohammed Kudus and Tomas Soucek.
