Nottingham Forest Defender Andrew Omobamidele Set for Permanent Move to Strasbourg
Andrew Omobamidele looks set to depart Nottingham Forest this summer, with a permanent switch to Strasbourg on the horizon after a promising loan spell in Ligue 1.
The French club has triggered the option to buy the Republic of Ireland international, who initially joined Forest from Norwich City in a £11 million deal on deadline day of the 2023 summer transfer window.
Strangely, Omobamidele seemed like a player suited to former Forest manager Steve Cooper’s style, but he didn’t make his debut until after Cooper’s departure.
Under Nuno Espirito Santo, the centre-back featured 14 times in the second half of the 2023/24 season.
However, he made just one appearance for Forest in the 2024/25 campaign—a Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle—before heading out on loan to Strasbourg.
Contract Finalised as Strasbourg Move Nears Completion
According to L’Équipe, Omobamidele has agreed to a four-year contract with Strasbourg, who compete in the UEFA Europa Conference League.
While there were reportedly some concerns about the move internally at Strasbourg, new head coach Liam Rosenior has been a strong advocate for signing the 21-year-old on a permanent basis.
The exact fee Strasbourg will pay is still unclear, but Forest will be hoping to at least recoup the £11 million they spent, especially given the club’s need to stay within Profit and Sustainability Regulation (PSR) limits.
Omobamidele made 11 appearances for Strasbourg during his loan and played a role in helping the club achieve an impressive sixth-place finish in Ligue 1.
Forest Looking to Trim the Squad Further
Omobamidele’s departure could be the first of several as Forest looks to offload fringe players.
The club is also expected to move on from Josh Bowler, Matt Turner, and Lewis O’Brien—three players who are currently on the books but unlikely to feature in next season’s plans.
While Omobamidele is a solid and talented defender with a bright future ahead for both club and country, his timing at Forest was unfortunate.
With the likes of Nikola Milenković, Murillo, Morato, and Willy Boly ahead of him in the pecking order, a fresh start in France appears to be the right move for all parties.
