David Moyes Eyes Midfield Reinforcement as Everton Rebuild Begins

David Moyes is looking to build on the impressive turnaround he oversaw at Everton during the latter half of last season—and identifying the right midfield addition will be key to that progress.

After stepping in for Sean Dyche in January, Moyes guided the Toffees to a solid finish.

Everton ended the Premier League campaign in 13th place with 48 points, a significant achievement considering the struggles earlier in the season.

With the club now under new ownership via The Friedkin Group, attention has shifted to strengthening the squad during their first full transfer window.

Everton are said to be targeting four key areas, with central midfield among the top priorities.

Following Orel Mangala’s return to Lyon—his loan cut short due to a serious knee injury—and the departure of Abdoulaye Doucouré at the end of his contract, Moyes is on the hunt for a strong midfield presence. One name that could fit the bill is Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz.

Juventus Ready to Offload Douglas Luiz Amid Premier League Interest

Douglas Luiz arrived at Juventus last summer in a £42 million move from Aston Villa.

However, his time in Italy has been underwhelming. Limited by injuries, he made just 26 appearances and failed to make the desired impact.

Juventus are now reportedly willing to move him on, with Tuttosport claiming that newly-promoted Leeds United are keen on securing his services to strengthen their midfield.

That said, Everton may want to explore the opportunity themselves. Given Luiz’s extensive Premier League experience—175 appearances with Aston Villa—he could be a valuable asset for Moyes as he reshapes the squad.

Reports suggest that Juventus would consider an initial loan deal with an obligation to buy next summer, potentially for around £26 million. That structure could make the deal more accessible for Everton.

Why Douglas Luiz Could Be an Ideal Fit at Everton

Despite his disappointing stint in Serie A, Luiz’s quality is not in question. His final season at Villa showcased his full potential—he registered 10 goals and 10 assists as a dynamic box-to-box midfielder.

He’s known for his energy, creativity, and leadership qualities, attributes that Unai Emery praised during his time in Birmingham.

Luiz could be an ideal replacement for Doucouré, bringing a similar sense of freedom and drive to Everton’s midfield.

Additionally, as a left-footed player, Luiz would add balance to Moyes’s midfield unit, which currently lacks a natural left-footer in the center.

Luiz also has something to prove. After a tough year in Italy, he may view Everton as a chance to reset and revive his career in a league where he previously thrived.

With Moyes’s track record of revitalizing underperforming players—Beto being a recent example—the manager may be just the figure to help Luiz rediscover his best form.

If Everton can act swiftly and smartly, Luiz could become a major piece in Moyes’s effort to return the club to the top half of the Premier League table.
