West Ham to Begin Season at Sunderland with Potentially New-Look Line-Up
West Ham United will open their new campaign with an away trip to the Stadium of Light to face newly promoted Sunderland — and by then, their starting XI could look very different.
Following a disappointing season, Graham Potter will be hoping for a positive start against weaker opposition.
Still, despite the seemingly favorable fixture, early pressure could mount if the team doesn’t hit the ground running.
There’s plenty of work ahead over the summer, and with limited funds available, Potter will need to be strategic in shaping his squad.
West Ham Eye Aaron Ramsdale as New No. 1
One of the key priorities for the Hammers is securing a new goalkeeper.
With Lukasz Fabianski departing at the end of his contract, Potter is left with only Alphonse Areola in goal.
At 32 and coming off a challenging season, Areola may not be the long-term answer, and Aaron Ramsdale has emerged as a potential target following Southampton’s relegation.
Due to Premier League spending rules (PSR), West Ham’s transfer activity will need to be selective. As such, a defensive line featuring Jean-Clair Todibo, Max Kilman, and Konstantinos Mavropanos could take shape.
All three were regulars last season, with Todibo finishing strong and Kilman particularly impressive throughout.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka was one of the club’s standout performers last season, earning Player of the Season honors.
He’s expected to retain his role at wing-back, potentially partnered on the opposite flank by promising youngster Ollie Scarles.
Scarles broke into the first team under Potter and could further cement his place during pre-season.
Midfield Reinforcements on the Horizon
In midfield, West Ham are reportedly targeting Josh Brownhill and Jacob Ramsey.
Brownhill, linked with a move to the London Stadium, could arrive on a free if he doesn’t renew with Burnley — an ideal scenario for West Ham’s restricted budget. Meanwhile, Ramsey made 29 league appearances for Aston Villa and could be available at a reduced fee, making him another potential bargain.
Jarrod Bowen remains a key figure and is not expected to leave, despite ongoing interest from other clubs.
Lucas Paquetá’s future remains uncertain as he awaits the outcome of his FA investigation. If cleared, he will be determined to make a strong comeback.
Calvert-Lewin in West Ham’s Sights
Up front, talks are reportedly underway to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who is available on a free following his Everton exit.
Though recent injury troubles make him a bit of a gamble, the striker will be eager to prove himself and return to form.
