Paul Mullin in Talks Over Potential Wrexham Exit Amid Wigan Interest
Wrexham striker Paul Mullin is reportedly in discussions about a potential move away from the club during the summer transfer window.
Mullin is under contract with the Welsh side until 2027, but interest from League One outfit Wigan Athletic has sparked speculation about a possible departure.
Previous reports suggested Mullin could leave on a free transfer, largely due to the challenge of offloading his high wages.
This week, new developments have emerged linking the 29-year-old with a move to Wigan, who are targeting two new forwards this window. Talks between Mullin and the third-tier club are believed to be ongoing.
Amid the transfer speculation, Wrexham legend Andy Morrell has weighed in on Mullin’s future.
The Liverpool-born striker, who won three consecutive Wrexham Player of the Season awards and was the club’s top scorer from 2021/22 to 2023/24, was dropped from the League One squad in January following the arrivals of Jay Rodriguez and Sam Smith.
In the latest episode of Welcome to Wrexham, Mullin shared his desire to play in the Championship with the club backed by Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
Morrell echoed that sentiment, expressing hope that Mullin would stay and fight for a chance in the second tier.
“I’d love it if he stayed and gave himself that chance,” Morrell told BBC Sport. “He’s a proven goalscorer, and we’ve seen him perform well against Championship sides before.
I hope he comes back fit, has a strong pre-season, and gives the manager a real decision to make.”
Morrell added: “His future may already be decided, but I’d love to see him take that shot and challenge Phil Parkinson’s plans. He deserves that opportunity.”
Phil Parkinson Explains Mullin’s Exclusion
Wrexham fans were vocal in their support for Mullin after he was dropped in the latter half of the 2024/25 season.
However, even on the final day against Lincoln City—with promotion already secured—Mullin and fellow striker Ollie Palmer were left out of the squad.
In Welcome to Wrexham Season 4, Episode 6, manager Phil Parkinson shed light on the decision to omit both players.
“With the addition of two new strikers in January, we knew we’d have a surplus,” Parkinson explained. “You can only name seven substitutes, and tough choices had to be made.
Mullin didn’t quite find his usual scoring form. He started the season well and played decently overall, but the goals just didn’t come.”
He continued: “League One is a step up, and we needed more from the number nine role. Both Paul and Ollie continued to train hard, but it’s a competitive league, and the transition isn’t easy.”
