Aston Villa Eye Move for Bologna Defender Jhon Lucumí

Aston Villa have been linked with a move for Colombian international Jhon Lucumí, the 26-year-old centre-back currently playing for Serie A side Bologna.

Villa are in the market for defensive reinforcements this summer following the end of Axel Disasi’s loan and the January sale of Diego Carlos. They face competition from Bournemouth, who are also keen to strengthen at the back after selling Dean Huijsen to Real Madrid for over £50 million.

Lucumí has a £24 million release clause in his current contract with Bologna, but both Premier League clubs are reportedly reluctant to meet that price. Notably, the clause is set to expire at the end of June, adding urgency to any potential deal.

Lucumí’s Impact in Serie A and European Competition

Lucumí has spent the last three seasons at Bologna and played a key role in their impressive 2023–24 campaign, which saw them qualify for the Champions League. He made seven appearances last season, including a full 90-minute performance at Villa Park, where Bologna were defeated 2-0 by Unai Emery’s side in October.

He also scored his sole goal of the season during a Champions League defeat to Lille.

International Duties and Praise from His Manager

This summer, Lucumí has been on international duty with Colombia, featuring in a 1-1 draw against Argentina in a World Cup qualifier. He lined up alongside fellow Colombian and former Villa striker Jhon Durán, facing off against current Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.

Bologna head coach Vincenzo Italiano has spoken highly of Lucumí, calling him a rare talent with tremendous potential:

“A former teammate came to watch Lucumí train and told me there’s a phenomenon in this team. A defender with his physical attributes and skill set is exceptional.

But Jhon knows that to reach the top level, he must cut out the mistakes. It’s all about mentality. If he applies himself, he can become a top player. We’ve spoken openly about the errors and are working together to improve.”

Villa’s interest in Lucumí reflects their continued ambition under Emery, but whether they move before the release clause expires remains to be seen.
