Wolves’ Summer Shake-Up Continues as Doyle’s Future Hangs in the Balance

Wolverhampton Wanderers are undergoing a significant summer overhaul, already making moves to reshape their squad ahead of the new Premier League season.

In a bright start to their transfer business, Wolves have secured the signing of Fer Lopez for a reported fee of £20 million – marking the club’s first addition of the window.

However, the departures of key players Matheus Cunha to Manchester United and Rayan Ait-Nouri to Manchester City have left notable gaps in the squad. New manager Vitor Pereira still has work to do if he’s to mold a team capable of competing effectively next term.

Among the current Wolves squad, one player potentially on his way out has received special praise from a club legend.

Simon Osborn Picks Tommy Doyle as His Ideal Midfield Partner

Former Wolves midfielder Simon Osborn, who made 185 appearances and scored 14 goals for the club between 1995 and 2001, recently revealed the one current player he’d most like to have shared the pitch with: Tommy Doyle.

Osborn, known for his consistent performances during his playing days, told Wolves’ official website:

“In the programme previously, I’ve spoken about my love of Joao Moutinho when he was at Wolves.”
He added: “Among the current group – the Brazilian lads like Joao Gomes and Andre are great – but Tommy Doyle stands out.”

Doyle’s energy and technical ability seem to have made a lasting impression on the Wolves veteran.

Uncertain Future: Sunderland Eye Doyle in Potential Swap Deal

Tommy Doyle joined Wolves from Manchester City in the summer of 2023 and enjoyed a solid start under Gary O’Neil.

However, his playing time dropped significantly during the 2024/25 campaign under Vitor Pereira, who preferred a central pairing of Joao Gomes and Andre.

That shift has triggered speculation about Doyle’s future at Molineux. The 23-year-old midfielder is understood to be keen on more regular minutes as he looks to continue his development.

Sunderland have emerged as a potential destination, with reports suggesting he could be involved in a swap deal that would bring defender Trai Hume to Wolves.

Championship clubs are also said to be monitoring Doyle’s situation.

While it would be a shame to see the talented midfielder leave, a move could benefit both the player and club if regular minutes aren’t guaranteed in the upcoming season.
