It’s been a trying summer for the Midlands club, and their challenges could intensify if they fail to meet PSR requirements by Monday’s cut-off. Even with Philippe Coutinho’s expected transfer to Vasco da Gama, Villa are still believed to need at least one more outgoing to remain compliant.
As the clock ticks down, the club appears ready to take drastic measures. Reports suggest that Villa’s leadership is exploring all options to avoid breaching regulations—including the controversial idea of selling their women’s team, a move previously executed by Chelsea.
Such a decision would once again spotlight the PSR rules, which have already drawn criticism for their complexity and perceived inequities. Villa co-owner Nassef Sawiris previously voiced frustration with the framework, stating last year:
“Some of the rules have actually resulted in cementing the status quo more than creating upward mobility and fluidity in the sport. The rules do not make sense and are not good for football.”

Thanks to his homegrown status, the sale would count as pure profit on the books—offering a significant financial benefit.
Barry, who netted 16 goals during a standout loan spell at Stockport County last season, was seen as a rising talent within the club. Although an injury disrupted his later loan at Hull City, he had already demonstrated his capabilities in the first half of the campaign.
Praised by football scout Jacek Kulig for his “superb” season, Barry’s potential departure will be a hard pill to swallow for fans and staff alike. But with time running out, Aston Villa may have no choice but to let him go in order to balance the books.
