Tottenham discuss signing the most underrated young CB in the world
Although Tottenham Hotspur are no longer in danger of losing star centre-back Cristian Romero this summer—especially with Atletico Madrid backing out of the race after Spurs rejected their lowball offers—that doesn’t mean the North London club should stop scouting promising young defenders.
Centre-back depth remains a high priority among Europe’s elite clubs, and Real Madrid’s recent struggles have shown just how crucial a well-stocked backline can be, even for the most talented squads.
Tottenham currently boast one of the strongest centre-back pairings in football with Micky van de Ven and Romero. The duo proved their quality once again with a clean sheet against Manchester United in the Europa League Final.
Behind them, Kevin Danso, a standout in Ligue 1, is waiting for his Premier League breakthrough, while Radu Dragusin, a former Serie A standout, still has potential to make an impact.
Tottenham’s Continued Interest in Serie A Defenders
Despite having a solid core, Spurs continue to explore options for reinforcements—particularly players capable of stepping in if injuries arise. Their search has frequently focused on Serie A, with past interest in defenders like Jhon Lucumà and Koni De Winter.
Now, attention has shifted to a more exciting prospect: Atalanta’s Giorgio Scalvini. Once considered one of Serie A’s brightest young defenders, Scalvini has seen his profile drop due to back-to-back setbacks—a torn cruciate ligament followed by a serious shoulder injury.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs on the Last Word on Spurs YouTube show, Spurs have discussed a potential move for the 21-year-old.
While talks are still in the early stages, this could be a smart opportunity for Tottenham. Atalanta are known for fair but firm valuations, and given Scalvini’s current lack of suitors relative to his talent and pedigree, Spurs might be able to strike a deal before his value rebounds.
Despite his young age, Scalvini has already established himself in Serie A, posting more interceptions than tackles per game across the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons.
He fits Tottenham’s ideal profile for defenders: athletic, composed in possession, and highly intelligent in reading the game.
