Ipswich Town Poised for Premier League Promotion Push

Ipswich Town are preparing to mount a serious challenge for promotion to the Premier League in the upcoming season.

After achieving back-to-back promotions from League One to the top flight, Kieran McKenna’s men were relegated back to the Championship last season.

However, they return with a squad brimming with attacking talent and renewed ambition.

Among their standout threats is Sammie Szmodics, who was a revelation in the 2023/24 Championship campaign.

The Irish forward netted 27 goals for Blackburn Rovers, finishing as the league’s top scorer while helping his side narrowly avoid the drop.

Speaking to Football League World, Sky Sports pundit and former EFL striker Don Goodman expressed confidence in Szmodics’ potential impact at Portman Road.

“I was looking over Ipswich Town’s squad the other day and was reminded of the sheer firepower they possess—especially for this level,” said Goodman.

“Even after losing Liam Delap, they still boast players like Conor Chaplin, Omari Hutchinson, Wes Burns, Jaden Philogene, Nathan Broadhead, Jack Clarke, Ali Al Hamadi, and George Hirst.
But for me, Sammie Szmodics is the key figure.

He scored an incredible number of goals for a fairly average Blackburn side and finished top scorer. I have no doubt he’ll find the net plenty of times for Ipswich next season.”

Attacking Options Give Ipswich the Edge

When Ipswich last entered the Championship, they did so fresh from League One and were considered outsiders in the promotion race. This time, following a year in the Premier League, they return as one of the leading contenders.

With attacking options like Philogene, Clarke, and Chaplin already in place, Ipswich are expected to have one of the most formidable forward lines in the league.

The addition of Szmodics only strengthens their offensive arsenal—giving them a significant edge over the competition.

Szmodics was among the Championship’s most lethal strikers last season and played a vital role in steering Blackburn away from relegation.

If McKenna can integrate him effectively into Ipswich’s system, especially with creative support from Clarke and Philogene, Szmodics’ goal tally could rise even further.

The 29-year-old also contributed 49 chances for teammates during his final season with Rovers, highlighting his creative capabilities in addition to his scoring prowess.

While the battle for promotion promises to be highly competitive, Ipswich Town’s attacking depth could well position them as front-runners in the Championship title race.
