The current injury and suspension issues at Arsenal have sparked calls for Hale End talent Ethan Nwaneri to start against Tottenham. Mikel Arteta has addressed the possibility of including the 17-year-old in the North London derby.
Arteta, in a discussion with the Evening Standard, stated that Arsenal is prepared to utilize young players like Nwaneri when necessary. However, he did not confirm whether Nwaneri would feature in the match against Spurs.
“We need to adapt throughout the season,” Arteta explained. “This situation has arisen early, with our bench against Brighton being quite different from what we anticipated.”
Arteta acknowledged the role of young players and their potential contribution. “We have to seize these opportunities as our young players have shown they can be relied upon. If needed, we will definitely give them a chance.”
He praised Nwaneri’s development, noting significant progress over recent months. “He has developed enormously, thanks to the efforts of everyone in the academy, including Jack Wilshere, Mehmet Ali, Per Mertesacker, and their coaching staff.”
Arteta emphasized Nwaneri’s maturity and talent. “He’s physically and personally mature, with an improved understanding of the game. He has immense quality and talent and just needs the opportunity to showcase it.”
Nwaneri made history in September 2022 when he debuted for Arsenal at just 15 years and 181 days old against Brentford, becoming the youngest player in the Premier League and in Arsenal’s history. He made a second competitive appearance in a 6-0 win over West Ham in February 2024. Nwaneri has also been part of Arsenal’s matchday squad on eight other occasions across various competitions. Despite his limited experience, Arteta is confident in Nwaneri’s potential and is considering him for the upcoming derby against Tottenham.
