Tom Rennie has advised West Ham United to consider parting ways with Konstantinos Mavropanos following his performance against Fulham.
In Saturday’s match (15 September) at Craven Cottage, Julen Lopetegui’s team secured a crucial point after Danny Ings scored late to equalize Raul Jimenez’s first-half goal. Although Max Kilman faced criticism for Fulham’s opening goal, talkSPORT’s Rennie was particularly harsh on Mavropanos, claiming that the Greek defender is “nowhere near Premier League quality.”
On X (14 September), Rennie wrote: “Mavropanos again. Too deep. Doesn’t run back at pace. Doesn’t block the cross. Sorry, but he’s got to go. Nowhere near Premier League quality.”
Mavropanos’s frequent appearances under Lopetegui this season have been surprising, especially considering the former Real Madrid manager’s intent to overhaul the defense left by David Moyes. Despite Jean-Clair Todibo’s summer transfer from Nice, Mavropanos has consistently started, keeping Todibo out of the lineup.
Although it might be unfair to place all the blame for Fulham’s goal on Mavropanos, his slow reaction and failure to challenge the cross that led to Jimenez’s goal were notable issues. The 26-year-old has generally been reliable at West Ham, but his mistakes have often been costly.
While suggesting his immediate sale might be excessive, it wouldn’t be surprising if Todibo took his place in the starting lineup for the match against Chelsea next week.
