**West Ham Needs More from Lopetegui: Key Players Underperforming and Missed Opportunities**
West Ham United needs to see better performances under Julen Lopetegui. Despite some promising moments in the first month of the season, the team has only managed four points from 12, leaving much to be desired.
The situation isn’t dire, however, as several exciting summer signings, including Crysencio Summerville, Carlos Soler, Jean-Clair Todibo, and the injured Niclas Fullkrug, have yet to feature prominently in the Premier League.
Danny Ings did score a crucial late equalizer against Fulham, but with Chelsea visiting the London Stadium, Lopetegui may need to consider a tactical overhaul. Michail Antonio, in particular, has been underwhelming upfront, and Tomas Soucek’s recent performances suggest he should also be benched.
Soucek, who has been a reliable presence for West Ham since his £15m move from Slavia Prague in 2020, has struggled this season. Despite his previous contributions, including a crucial goal against Crystal Palace in August, his recent performances have been poor. Claret & Hugh rated him 3/10 after the Fulham draw, criticizing his ineffective link-up play and errant shooting.
With alternatives like Lucas Paqueta, newly-signed Soler, and Andy Irving available, it might be time to reconsider Soucek’s starting role. His recent lackluster performances, including being substituted at halftime last match, highlight the need for change.
West Ham might also regret the decision to let Flynn Downes leave. Southampton acquired Downes for £18m, recognizing his talents from his loan spell. Though he didn’t shine at West Ham last season, Downes was effective in the Championship and has continued to perform well for Southampton, ranking highly for pass attempts and completion.
Downes was praised by Southampton’s Russell Martin for his composure and impact, qualities West Ham could use. Despite the club’s increased possession this season, they still lack creativity and control, which Downes could have provided.
As Lopetegui continues to adapt his tactics, he may come to regret not having Downes in the squad. The young midfielder could have been a key player in elevating West Ham’s play and bridging the gap in their current strategy.
