Liverpool’s rising star Trey Nyoni may make his debut in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup match against West Ham as his rapid ascent continues.
The 17-year-old has been promoted from the Under-21s by head coach Arne Slot for the clash at Anfield. Nyoni made history earlier this year as the youngest player to represent the club in an FA Cup match, coming off the bench against Southampton at just 16 years and 243 days old.
He has been impressive with both Liverpool’s Under-21s and England’s Under-18s, and Slot is keen to give him more playing time. Nyoni joined Liverpool a year ago from Leicester, where he spent a decade in their academy, and there’s a growing excitement about his potential at Liverpool’s AXA training ground.
“He’s a very young player,” Slot said. “He just turned 17, but he has a lot of talent and made an impact during pre-season. However, talent alone isn’t enough to guarantee consistent first-team appearances.
“We need to continue nurturing him; he requires game time to grow. Sometimes as a manager, you want to include him in the first team, but it’s crucial for him to keep playing regularly.”
Slot added, “That’s why he played with the Under-19s in Milan; for his development, he needs to train with us and play at the highest level possible. Training alongside experienced players will help him progress, and we’re careful to remember he’s only 17.
“People see him as a talent because he has already shown some exciting capabilities.”
Liverpool has a history of integrating young talents into the squad, with players like Trent Alexander-Arnold, Conor Bradley, and Curtis Jones making their debuts in this competition.
Slot is eager to give Nyoni as many minutes as possible, especially after his standout performance during the Reds’ US pre-season tour and a goal against Sevilla in a recent friendly at Anfield.
Additionally, Slot believes Federico Chiesa is ready to make his first start for Liverpool after two substitute appearances. The Italy winger, who joined from Juventus for an initial £10 million, is not yet fit to play a full 90 minutes. “He can start, but I don’t think he’s ready for a full match,” Slot said. “He has only played a maximum of 25 minutes so far and didn’t participate in any friendlies with Juve.”
CaoimhÃn Kelleher will remain in goal, with Slot confirming that Alisson is struggling with a muscle injury and likely won’t be ready for the match against Wolves on Saturday. “Alisson is improving, but the West Ham game might be too soon for him,” he noted. “We’re hoping for the weekend against Wolves, but it will be close.”
