Liverpool is reportedly eyeing a summer transfer for Sunderland’s rising star midfielder, Chris Rigg.
The 17-year-old talent has made headlines this season with his impressive performances for the Black Cats. Rigg made his debut at just 15 under former Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray, playing a key role in a dramatic FA Cup comeback against Shrewsbury.
Since then, he has broken records, becoming Sunderland’s youngest outfield player and later their youngest scorer with a powerful header during a 5-1 victory over Southampton. He almost set the scoring record even earlier when a potential winner against Fulham in the FA Cup was ruled offside.
Now an integral part of Sunderland’s first team, the England youth international aims for the highest levels of the game. “That’s where I want to be,” Rigg told Chronicle Live, reflecting on his rapid rise and aspirations to compete against Premier League teams.
Sunderland fended off interest from several European clubs, including Manchester United, Bayern Munich, and Newcastle, all eager to sign him on his 17th birthday, as players in England cannot sign professional contracts until then. Rigg opted to remain at the Stadium of Light, prioritizing playing time, which will be crucial for any future discussions with Liverpool and manager Arne Slot. He has already made 32 senior appearances, scoring four goals.
“I was just waiting to get it all done,” Rigg shared. “I didn’t want to stress about contracts; I just wanted to play for Sunderland. It’s a great place to develop my career.”
When discussing the mindset needed to break into the first team at such a young age, Rigg emphasized humility. “Where I grew up, I was taught that if you’re not humble, you won’t succeed. That’s important to me, though I know I still have a long way to go.”
He added, “I focus on the present and helping this club return to the Premier League. The squad is talented, and they encourage me. This season, I really want to prove what I can do.”
