Goals from Jobe Bellingham and Wilson Isidor around halftime secured the win at the Stadium of Light, allowing Sunderland to rise to first place after Middlesbrough defeated West Brom. Le Bris was pleased with his team’s defensive discipline, particularly in the closing moments, but he believes they can enhance their possession play.
“It was another challenging match, and while our first half was solid, we need to exert more control, especially with the ball,” he stated. “We scored after a high recovery, which is crucial in games like this. Scoring quickly after halftime shifted the game’s dynamics, as they attempted to disrupt us with direct play and were strong in duels. Our discipline was key; our shape remains our foundation, and we handled set pieces well against a strong opponent. However, I want us to be more dominant in possession because we have the talent for it, and we’ll work on that.”
He praised Bellingham’s goal, noting, “It was a fantastic strike, and he’s capable of producing moments like that. In the first half, we missed opportunities to simplify our play—sometimes opting for dribbles or extra passes instead of taking a shot. The connection among players in the final third wasn’t quite right, so that’s an area for improvement. In games like this, finding solutions is crucial, and we managed to do that.”
Le Bris also highlighted the team’s mentality, saying, “It’s encouraging to win even when we’re not at our best, especially at home following a defeat. The group’s mindset is strong. I mentioned before the game that we need to trust our model and the learning process. We’re still developing, learning from both good and bad experiences. After twelve to fifteen games, I believe we’ll have a stronger foundation.”
Sunderland will face a significant test of their promotion aspirations when Leeds United visits the Stadium of Light on Friday night.
