“It’s a clear penalty—Liverpool dodged a major bullet. Why was Crystal Palace denied such a crucial chance to equalize?”- Joe Cole is perplexed after Crystal Palace was clearly denied a penalty due to Virgil van Dijk’s controversial actions against Marc Guehi.

Joe Cole has stated that Crystal Palace were unfairly denied a penalty during their match against Liverpool, labeling Virgil van Dijk’s arm pull on Marc Guehi as a “nailed-on penalty.”

With the score at 1-0 in favor of Liverpool at Selhurst Park, Trevoh Chalobah directed a set-piece towards goal, and Guehi appeared to be pulled down by van Dijk in the six-yard box as he attempted to make a play. Liverpool ultimately secured the win, but this incident ignited considerable online debate.

Arne Slot’s team now sits four points clear at the top of the Premier League, while Oliver Glasner’s side remains in the relegation zone after seven games without a victory.

Cole criticized the explanation provided by the Premier League, which stated that van Dijk’s actions did not constitute “sustained holding” and had “no impact on the play,” leading to a VAR review that found no fault.

Cole disagreed with this assessment, arguing that Palace were denied a crucial chance to equalize. While commenting on TNT Sports, he said, “We saw it at West Ham; I don’t understand. He’s briefly grabbed Marc Guehi’s hand. You can say he won’t reach the ball, but van Dijk can’t know that. As Chalobah strikes it, it could have easily reached him.”

He added, “He held him back by the arm, and looking at Guehi’s reaction—he’s not one to claim a penalty unless he genuinely believes it—makes it clear to me that it was indeed a penalty. Liverpool got away with one there.”
