“Brighton Fans Savage James Maddison: The Brutal Jibe That Stung After Tottenham’s Epic Collapse
Brighton had the final say over James Maddison following his dart-throwing celebration during their impressive comeback victory against Tottenham.
Maddison had initially put Spurs ahead with a calm finish after Brennan Johnson’s opener, celebrating by miming a dart throw at a TV camera. However, Brighton turned the game around with goals from Yankuba Minteh, Georginio Rutter, and Danny Welbeck, sparking jubilant scenes at the Amex Stadium. After the match, the club’s DJ played Planet Funk’s “Chase The Sun,” a song closely associated with darts events, seemingly teasing Maddison’s signature celebration.
Maddison, who has used this celebration since his time at Leicester, recalled in 2022: “I first did it at Newcastle away during the Worlds. It became a topic of conversation among me, Jamie Vardy, Luke Thomas, and Harvey Barnes—we play darts all the time on away trips.”
The match against Brighton added another chapter to the ongoing darts celebration saga. In the 2023 North London derby, Bukayo Saka had also celebrated with the gesture after a penalty, leading Maddison to joke about it during international duty. “I had a bit of banter with Bukayo,” he said. “He must’ve been doing it when I turned him for the first goal.”
The drama continued as Spurs faced Brentford, where Neal Maupay mimicked the dart celebration after scoring. Following the match, Maddison quipped, “He probably hasn’t scored enough goals recently to warrant his own celebration, so he had to copy mine!”
Maupay responded on Instagram, saying, “Went a bit early with that one. Gutted we couldn’t get the win. More goals and fewer relegations in my career than James Maddison. We go again Monday, Bees.”
